GUGGIFÖHN
Who ist the Guggiföhn...
Wengen’s oldest inhabitant! An exceptional local “föhn” wind phenomenon that blows when the wind comes from the south-east or east instead of from the south-west and south as is usually the case.
The Guggiföhn descends from the Jungfraujoch, sweeps down a narrow channel directly over the Wixi-Lauberhorn area and then lifts off over the Lauterbrunnen valley. Maximum wind speeds of 150 to 200 km/h are not unusual.
From a meteorological point of view the Lauberhorn Race is one of the greatest challenges for the weathermen. Despite the wintry temperatures, the Bernese Oberland – watched over by the giant Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains – is capable of bringing meteorologists out in a sweat.
The west and south-westerly winds hardly ever bring heavy rain or snowfall. The sun can even shine at times. On the other hand the barrier effect of the mountains on clouds from the north or north-east causes never-ending heavy snowfall.
